Barbara Kenerson became a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in 2023, aligning her longstanding passion for mental health with advanced clinical practice. She has been a registered nurse for 33 years, with the majority of her experience in the emergency department. Throughout her career, she has held roles as a nurse educator, clinical informatics specialist, and in leadership positions. These experiences have contributed to her strong clinical skills, adaptability, and ability to manage complex, high-acuity situations.
Barbara takes a compassionate, patient-centered approach to mental health treatment, recognizing the complex interplay between emotional, cognitive, and behavioral well-being. She collaborates closely with patients to understand their experiences, identify underlying factors, and develop individualized treatment plans that may include medication management, therapeutic support, and practical coping strategies. She emphasizes accountability, emotional insight, and skill-building to help patients manage symptoms and improve daily functioning. She prioritizes clear communication, accessibility, and responsiveness, ensuring patients feel heard, supported, and able to reach her when needed, while also connecting them with appropriate mental health resources for ongoing care and stability.
During the first visit, patients can expect a comprehensive mental health assessment to understand their overall history, including family psychiatric history, childhood experiences, relationships, past and current stressors, and prior treatments—what has and hasn’t worked. The visit is collaborative, with a focus on incorporating the patient’s perspective, preferences, and goals into the treatment plan. Creating a comfortable, supportive environment is a priority so patients feel at ease, engaged, and more likely to follow through with care.
